Rotary fish barriers

The Hydro-Drum rotary fish barrier is available in both the undershot and overshot configurations.  They are ideally suited for the containment of fish within a lake or pond (hatchery isolation, hatchery water intake screens) and the exclusion of undesirable species from entering a river or other protected aquatic system.

The overshot Hydro-Drum rotary fish barrier is used where differential head is available and where fish containment is desired.  Water passing through the top half of the drum is diverted to the sides of the drum where it flows into cups, which utilize gravity to provide rotational force for the drum. Debris on the upstream side of the drum is lifted by the rotating drum and is deposited on the downstream side of the drum.

The drum is easily installed in either the existing, or new stop log guides. If needed, stop log spacers are then utilized on the bottom of the unit to establish the desired height of the top of the drum to set the desired upstream water elevation.

ADVANTAGES:

  • Self cleaning
  • No energy requirements
  • Easy installation
  • Non corrosive 304 stainless steel construction

The undershot Hydro-Drum screen passes water directly through the drum, which rotates to lift debris from the upstream side of the drum to be deposited on the downstream side of the drum. An internal paddle wheel drives a planetary gear system to provide drum rotation. The unit is used where low differential head is available and where higher flows are required.

The unit is manufactured to customer furnished dimensions so that it can easily fit into existing channel stop log slots or into newly installed slot guides which are installed on existing concrete structures. Stop log spacing below the unit is utilized for the desired drum elevation.

ADVANTAGES:

  • Self cleaning
  • No energy requirements
  • Easy installation
  • Non corrosive 304 stainless steel construction

Where flows vary greatly the Hydro-Drum can be rotated using solar power. The drum is powered by solar panels which charge batteries to operate a small fractional horsepower gearmotor.
